UWS ITFSI Industry Partner Helia Photonics Ltd wins CeeD (Centre for Engineering, Education and Development) 2020 Awards Knowledge Exchange category
A knowledge exchange project between UWS Institute of Thin Films, Sensors & Imaging (ITFSI – www.itfsi.com ) and Helia Photonics Ltd (HPL) secured first place for industry partner HPL in the CeeD (Centre for Engineering, Education and Development) 2020 Awards Knowledge Exchange category. The project transferred patented plasma technology invented by Professor Des Gibson from UWS ITFSI to HPL, now utilised in HPL`s production environment.
The knowledge exchange project addressed a need for enhanced throughput manufacturing processes for high performance precision optical coatings, aligned with a high growth global market need for high volume/ low-cost optically coated components. The project was facilitated through two funded InnovateUK projects and one funded Royal Academy of Engineering programme – total secured external funding £1.152M. Project outputs have also been used in a collaborative research projects with Tong Ji university (Shanghai) for use in high power laser systems and also Glasgow & Strathclyde universities for next generation optical coatings deployed in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) consortium.
The project produced two successful PhD completions, one sponsored by HPL, and four high impact publications. The project will form the basis for one of UWS ITFSI`s four REF 2021 case studies.
